Job Summary

The School Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, teachers, staff, and visitors. This position is responsible for general cleaning, routine facility upkeep, minor repairs, and ensuring building security. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, reliable, and committed to maintaining health and safety standards across all school grounds.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Cleaning & Sanitation

  • Classrooms & Offices: Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors; dust surfaces, furniture, and light fixtures; empty trash and recycling bins daily.
  • Restrooms: Clean, sanitize, and disinfect sinks, toilets, urinals, mirrors, and fixtures; restock soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
  • Common Areas: Clean hallways, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and stairwells; clean interior and low exterior windows and door glass.
  • Spills & Hazards: Respond quickly to unexpected spills, accidents, or biohazardous materials in accordance with district safety protocols.

Maintenance & Safety

  • Routine Upkeep: Perform minor maintenance tasks, such as replacing light bulbs, unstopping minor plumbing clogs, or tightening loose screws.
  • Hazard Reporting: Inspect grounds for damage, safety risks, or major repair needs and report them promptly to the Facilities Supervisor.
  • Chemical Safety: Safely store, handle, and use cleaning chemicals according to OSHA and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) guidelines.
  • Building Security: Ensure windows and doors are securely locked, and unauthorized persons are reported to school administration.

Event Support & Seasonal Duties

  • Event Setup/Takedown: Arrange chairs, tables, and equipment for assemblies, meetings, sporting events, and extracurricular activities.
  • Groundskeeping: Clear debris, litter, snow, or ice from walkways, entrances, and parking lots as needed.
  • Deep Cleaning (Break Periods): Perform deep-cleaning projects during summer, winter, and spring breaks (e.g., stripping/waxing tile floors, shampooing carpets, washing walls).

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Experience: Previous custodial, janitorial, or maintenance experience preferred (school environment preferred).
  • Background Check: Must pass a mandatory criminal background check and fingerprinting.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with basic cleaning methods, floor care machinery (buffers, vacuums), and chemical handling.
  • Soft Skills: Strong work ethic, ability to work independently, good time management, and a positive attitude around children and school staff.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach overhead, and climb ladders for extended periods.
  • Lifting Capacity: Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Work Environment: Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, unpleasant odors, noise from cleaning equipment, and variable outdoor weather conditions.
