Job Summary

The Special Education Paraprofessional provides essential academic, behavioral, and personal care support to students with diverse learning and developmental needs. Working under the direct supervision of a certified Special Education Teacher, the paraprofessional assists in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), reinforcing classroom instruction, and fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instructional Support: Deliver one-on-one or small-group reinforcement of lessons originally introduced by the certified teacher; assist students with accommodated assignments and specialized learning materials.
  • Behavior Management: Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), practice positive behavioral supports, de-escalate disruptions, and collect data on student progress as directed.
  • Personal & Physical Care: Assist students with mobility, transitions between classes, and daily living activities if outlined by their IEP.
  • Supervision: Monitor and supervise students during non-instructional periods, including arrival/dismissal, recess, lunch, assemblies, and field trips.
  • Collaboration & Documentation: Maintain strict student confidentiality (FERPA compliance); document daily progress logs and communicate regularly with the supervising teacher regarding student needs.

Qualifications & Requirements

To meet the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) standards, applicants must possess:

Educational Background (Must meet at least one):

  • An Associate’s degree (or higher) from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 60 semester college credit hours.
  • A passing score of 457 or higher on the ETS ParaPro Assessment (alongside a High School Diploma/GED). Can be obtained after hired. 

Required Clearances:

  • Clearance on all mandatory Arkansas Department of Education background checks, federal fingerprinting, and the Arkansas Child Maltreatment Central Registry.
  • Skills: High level of patience, empathy, adaptability, strong communication skills, and the physical ability to lift, bend, or stand for extended periods if assisting students with mobility needs.
