Position Overview
The Head Boys Basketball Coach is responsible for leadership, supervision, and development of the entire boys basketball program (Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman teams). The primary objective is to foster an environment that promotes athletic excellence, academic achievement, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal character development among student-athletes.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Strategy
- Design, implement, and oversee the strategic vision for the entire 7-12 boys basketball program.
- Determine system play, offensive and defensive philosophies, and ensure consistency across all team levels.
- Organize, schedule, and conduct structured, purposeful daily practices.
- Manage game-day operations, including strategy, substitutions, and in-game adjustments.
Student-Athlete Development & Mentorship
- Prioritize the academic progress of student-athletes, monitoring grades and cooperating with faculty to ensure academic eligibility.
- Build a culture of discipline, accountability, respect, and sportsmanship.
- Provide guidance on recruiting processes for student-athletes aspiring to play at the collegiate level.
- Safeguard the physical and emotional well-being of all players, ensuring proper injury prevention and adherence to safety protocols.
Administration & Personnel Management
- Supervise, evaluate, and mentor assistant coaching staff.
- Coordinate with the Athletic Director regarding game scheduling, transportation, budgeting, and equipment purchasing.
- Maintain accurate inventory of uniforms, equipment, and training supplies.
- Ensure full compliance with school district policies, league rules, and state high school athletic association regulations.
Community & Media Relations
- Maintain clear, professional, and timely communication with parents, players, and school administration.
- Act as a positive ambassador for the school, engaging with local media, booster clubs, and youth basketball programs.
- Organize and oversee fundraising events and summer camps to support the program’s financial needs.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
- Coaching Experience: Minimum of 2 years of coaching experience required, with high school head coach or varsity assistant experience highly preferred.
- Certifications: Valid teaching certificate, NFHS Coach Certification, and current First Aid/CPR/AED certification. Must be willing to get CDL.
- Legal & Background Clearances: Must successfully pass a mandatory criminal background check, fingerprinting, and all district-required child abuse clearances.
- Leadership & Communication: Strong organizational, time-management, and motivational skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders (students, parents, admins, and media).
- Character: High level of emotional intelligence, patience, and conflict-resolution skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Deep knowledge of basketball skills, tactics, rules, and training methods.
- Strong organizational, time-management, and motivational skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders (students, parents, admins, media).
