Middle School Counselor

Overview
The Middle School Counselor provides comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling services to students in grades 5-8. This role focuses on academic, social-emotional, and college/career readiness, ensuring a supportive and inclusive environment. A strong emphasis is placed on character education, behavioral support, and trauma-informed practices.
Key Responsibilities
Counseling and Student Support
- Provide individual and group counseling to students in grades 5-8 addressing academic, personal, and social development.
- Implement and coordinate the character education program for all middle school students.
- Conduct weekly classroom guidance lessons for students in grades 5-6 focused on social-emotional learning and academic skills.
- Provide crisis intervention and counseling as needed.
- Consult with parents, teachers, and administrators regarding student needs and progress.
Academic and Scheduling
- Assist all students with course selection and academic planning, including the transition to high school (high school course counseling).
- Coordinate the master schedule process for middle school students, including student placement and balancing class loads.
- Monitor student grades and academic progress, intervening with support strategies when necessary.
Professional and School Responsibilities
- Serve as a resource for staff on issues related to student behavior, mental health, and trauma-informed practices.
- Collaborate with the administrative team and staff to address school-wide behavioral challenges.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Master's degree in School Counseling or a related field.
- Valid state certification or licensure as a School Counselor.
- Prior experience working with middle school-aged students (grades 5-8) is preferred.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Demonstrated understanding of developmental needs for students in grades 5-8.
- Expertise in behavior support training and implementation.
- Comprehensive knowledge of and commitment to trauma-informed practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community members.
- Proficiency in scheduling software and student management systems.
Reporting Structure
The Middle School Counselor reports to the Principal.
